Erbenochile
Family: Acastidae
Era: Middle Devonian
Locality: Jbel Issoumour, Morocco
Size: 1.5" - 2"

Erbenochile-1

Ah, this is one of the rarer guys. Discovered only a few years ago, this guys is
called "Big Eyes" by the Moroccans and also called Saharops. See this to see
what a well-prepared one is like:
http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/virtual-wonders/vrtrilo1.html.
These are still very rare and very high priced. The specimen above has some
repair to the eyes since its very difficult to get intact lenses when preparing
these guys. What were the towering eyes for? Long distance vision or something
like that.

Erbenochile-2

This one is totally natural and doesn't have repairs done to the eyes. Oh ya, I
forgot to mention the back fin; there's a row of sharp little spines along the
back. The other interesting part of this piece is that he's enrolled! Yup, in a
nice half circle to show off his defenses. Don't you love the eyes? He reminds
me of batman for some reason.
