Fossil Shark: Heterodontus sp.
Typically you only see small shark fossils from Lebanon; dog sharks and cat
sharks. In this rare case, you have a large shark from the Bullhead / Horn shark
order; Heterodontiformes, family; Heterodontidae, genus; Heterodonus.
The identifying features include the rather robust head and the distinct
indented dorsal fin. There is a distinct vertebrae column, a very pronounced
head, well defined fins, and even textured skin. Extraordinary detail for a
shark fossil. No teeth though. And no restoration.
Size: Shark measures 48 cm (19 inches) on a 53 x 22 cm matrix.
Location: Hjoula, Lebanon
Age: Middle Cretaceous, Cenomanian (95 Million years old)
