Blattodea- Cockroaches

There appear to be several species of cockroaches in the Crato member; from several common ones with distinct wing covers, to one species of what appears to be a possibly aquatic roach.

C.BLT-01

Here is a well preserved cockroach from the Santana formation. The forewings are very well preserved with original color patterns. The hind legs and cerci are also very distinctive. This specimen measured 2.2 cm in diameter with a 1.5 cm body length.

C.BLT-02

Another roach very similar to the first one. Very nice coloration in the wings.

C.BLT-03

Another roach, this time with forewings and other wings shown. Water currents have pushed one forewing off to the side.

C.BLT-04

Another one of the similar species.

C.BLT-05

Here we have one of the larger roach types. The body length is over 2.8 cm long with a 2 cm antennae.

C.BLT-06

Another of the larger cockroach species, this time with one of the forewings exposed. Notice the venation on the wings.

C.BLT-07

Not entirely sure about this one, but it appears to be an aquatic roach...

The preservation of this piece is rather interesting. First of all, it's in a different colored matrix than the usual iron-rich tan Santana material. Secondly, the wing is preserved in 3-D with very fine and textured venation. It's rather neat, you can actually feel the wings. The body has darker material, which may include possible carbon preservation.
